Detailed Description
The primary responsibility of the Research Analyst (FIG) is to assist McKinsey consulting teams on banking, insurance and asset management engagements, providing expert client service in strategic and operational topics, as well as contribute to the development of the firm’s financial services knowledge initiatives. 
 
The Analyst is expected to conduct research, structure analyses, and synthesize facts related to the Indonesia financial services sector, as well as Southeast Asia in general. These will serve as critical inputs to client service and McKinsey engagement teams.

Separately, the analyst will also contribute towards the development of the firm’s financial services knowledge initiatives, which look into areas such as financial services strategy and other related operational and regulatory topics.  
 
Major Responsibilities:
  • Conduct timely and cost-effective business research on the Indonesia financial services sector, as well as Southeast Asia markets in general
  • Demonstrate expert client service in the financial services domain. For example, the candidate may be required to run models for banking profit pools, assess regulatory landscape of financial services sector, and outline the impact of industry trends such as digital banking and mobile payments
  • Summarize, analyze and synthesize relevant data and information, including the preparation of accurate, clear, McKinsey-formatted memos and charts to present findings
  • Support consulting teams and clients, as required, both off-site and on-site
  • Contribute proactively to knowledge development efforts related to the financial services sector by developing sectorial knowledge packs, as well as develop and maintain in-house financial services product landscape databases
Development Opportunities:

The tenured Research Analyst is expected to develop distinctive knowledge spikes in the Indonesia financial services sector (with broader view of Southeast Asia) and provide deep sector insights. The Analyst is expected to become a true counsellor to consultants and develop tailor-made analysis addressing the specific challenges of companies or situations. 

The exposure gained over a period could bring the Research Analyst to the next position of Senior Research Analyst in which he/she is expected to be a credible thought partner with senior consultants and Partners.  Exceptional performers meanwhile may be given the opportunity to pursue an expert consultant track with the firm.

General Qualifications:
  • Significant understanding of the Indonesia financial services sector, with a broader sectoral view on Southeast Asia
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with strong command of Bahasa considering Indonesia is the primary country of research coverage
  • Highly resourceful, with superior problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Good time-management skills and a flexible attitude, with ability to meet tight deadlines and handle simultaneous work streams
  • Strong customer service orientation with willingness to work in a demanding and results-oriented team environment
  • Willingness to travel to client sites in Indonesia, as well as regionally in Southeast Asia
  • IT skills: Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and basic familiarity of Lotus Notes
Education
  • Applicants should possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in fields related to economics or financial services e.g. actuarial science, banking, commerce, business, finance, etc. from a reputable university.
Previous Experience:
  • Ideally between 2 to 4 years of work experience in undertaking financial services research e.g., financial services regulatory boards, banking & investment houses, etc., or related financial services sector consulting work. Operational experience in a financial services setting is desirable as well. Deep working knowledge of the sector in Indonesia and general overview of the Southeast Asia region is critical

Language requirement:

  • Fluent in English, and preferably to be able to communicate in Bahasa, considering Indonesia is the primary country of research coverage
