Assesses, plans, monitors, evaluates and reports on project plans. Participates in and/or facilitates the design, development, and implementation of new operational controls, performance metrics, information management systems, and automated processes. Compiles and analyzes results of services for identification of improvement opportunities. Develops, produces, gathers and improves executive and line of business scorecards. Provides services benchmarking and industry comparative analysis support. Provides measurement and cost savings support (development, reporting, validation and improvement) for service management. Possesses a thorough knowledge of the interdependencies among business improvement teams and matrix partners; negotiates change through matrix partners; and serves as a technical, procedural, or workflow resource for improvement teams, matrix partners and management. Position requires strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills.

The Cigna Medical Group (CMG) Masters of Health Administration Student Resident will develop/design and participate in the execution of programs and initiatives to support the strategy of Cigna Medical Group, which may include managing work plans and processes, identifying data needs, gathering and analyzing data (quantitative and qualitative), and developing recommendations. The prospective individual will be responsible for the successful completion of rotations in functional support as well as a health care center. The Resident will be assigned a project to be completed over the course of the residentship, utilizing the functional rotations (see below) to learn and apply to the project.

Leadership team introductions

The Resident will meet key leaders in each department during their first two weeks. Thirty minute sessions with managers and other supervisors will help the resident to quickly gain an understanding of key leadership and department functions. The sessions focus on the goals, people and key processes of each area, and also show how the departments fit into the Cigna Medical Group (CMG) business model.

Project

The primary structure of the resident experience will be based on a project directly linked to Cigna Medical Group’s business strategy. The project definition and scope will be determined by the resident in partnership with their Preceptors, Ed Kim, President and General Manager and Dr John Parente, Chief Medical Information Officer. Rotational assignments will be directly linked to the project and will include departments listed below.

Rotations

Key components of this position will be data analysis and project management. The resident will participate in rotations in critical support areas. They will have responsibility to analysis information to support strategic initiatives or to gather information needed for their project, or other strategic initiatives designed to improve health outcomes.

Each of these rotations will last 6 - 8 weeks and will include an advisor from the functional area. The resident and advisor will meet within the first week of the rotation to review the outline of the project or work expectations/needs. Rotational assignments and expectations will be determined by the resident and the preceptor, with support from the Department Leader. Ideally, work activities will be directly tied to the resident’s project.

Health Care Center experience

A Health Services Manager (HSM) will serve as mentor and oversee the resident’s health care center experience. The HSM will ensure the right opportunities are available to gather information necessary to complete project work.

Expectations

  • Lead a project aligned to CMG business strategy to be determined by student in partnership with their preceptor that leads to business growth, improved operating efficiencies or a recommendation for a change to retain a competitive advantage.

  • Analyze healthcare data and make recommendations for changes that improve healthcare outcomes, patient experience or operational efficiency.

  • Attend department meetings, committee and project team meetings required to achieve leanings and project outcomes.
  • Manage projects associated with each support function as part of rotation responsibility. Project will be related to the function i.e. Finance, Medical Informatics, Marketing and the residents final project.
  • Partner with Operations Leaders in a Health Care Center setting to gain an understanding of center operating procedures. Spend time in centers, as necessary, to pilot or gather information for project(s) or other strategic initiatives.

Required skills and competencies

A bachelor’s degree in health or business administration and active participation in a Master’s degree program preferably in administrative leadership is preferable. Ideal candidate will have 1 – 2 year’s work experience in a health care delivery environment. Competencies include project management, organizing, problem solving, and priority setting and dealing with ambiguity, communication and presentation skills, Excel and Powerpoint.
