Detailed Description
The Southeast Asia Research desk comprises of a team of more than ten knowledge professionals based out of 5 offices across Southeast Asia:  Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. We undertake country and industry research and provide analytical support to McKinsey’s consulting teams, as well as contribute to the knowledge development efforts of the office.

The primary responsibility of the Research Analysts (Oil & Gas) is to assist McKinsey consulting teams on oil & gas engagements, providing expert client service in strategic and operational topics, as well as contribute to the development of the firm’s oil & gas knowledge initiatives. 
 
The Analyst is expected to conduct research, structure analyses and synthesize facts related to the Indonesia oil & gas sector, as well as Southeast Asia in general. These will serve as critical inputs to client service and McKinsey engagement teams. Separately, the analyst will also contribute towards the development of the firm’s oil & gas knowledge initiatives which looks into areas such as oil & gas strategy and other related operational and regulatory topics.  
Oil & Gas - Research Analyst - Southeast Asia - Jakarta

Major Responsibilities:
  • Conduct timely and cost-effective business research on the Indonesia oil & gas sector (oil and gas exploration and production, refining and petroleum-product marketing), as well as Southeast Asia markets in general
  • Demonstrate expert client service in the oil & gas domain. For example, the candidate may be required to drive operational performance improvement and devise investment strategies for petroleum clients, develop new petroleum tool kits, or model future demand and supply, etc.
  • Summarize, analyze and synthesize relevant data and information, including the preparation of accurate, clear, McKinsey-formatted memos and charts to present findings
  • Support consulting teams and clients as required, both off-site and on-site
  • Contribute proactively to knowledge development efforts related to oil & gas by developing knowledge packs
Development Opportunities:
  • The tenured Research Analyst is expected to develop distinctive knowledge spikes in the Indonesia oil & gas sector (with broader view of Southeast Asia) and provide deep sector insights.
  • The Analyst is expected to become a true counselor to consultants and develop tailor-made analysis addressing the specific challenges of companies or situations
  • The exposure gained over a period could bring the Research Analyst to the next position of Senior Research Analyst in which he/she is expected to be a credible thought partner with senior consultants and Partners

Knowledge and Skills Required:
 
General Qualifications:
  • Significant understanding of the Indonesia oil & gas sector (oil and gas exploration and production, refining and petroleum-product marketing), with a broader sectoral view on Southeast Asia
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with strong command of Bahasa considering Indonesia is the primary country of research coverage
  • Highly resourceful, with superior problem solving and analytical skills
  • Good time-management skills and a flexible attitude, with ability to meet tight deadlines and handle simultaneous work streams
  • Strong customer service orientation, with willingness to work in a demanding and results-oriented team environment
  • Willingness to travel to client sites in Indonesia, as well as regionally in Southeast Asia
  • IT skills: Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and basic familiarity of Lotus Notes
Education:
  • Applicants should possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in fields related to petroleum and chemical engineering from a reputable university.
 
Previous Experience:
  • Ideally between 2 to 4 years of working experience in undertaking oil & gas research, e.g., oil & gas research institutes, banking & investment houses, etc., or related oil & gas consulting work
  • Operational experience in a petroleum company is desirable as well
  • Deep working knowledge of the sector in Indonesia and general overview of the Southeast Asia region is critical
Language requirement:
  • Fluent in English and preferably able to communicate in Bahasa, considering Indonesia is the primary country of research coverage
