Why join us?

Consider using your business skills to address one of the biggest challenges facing our public education system - Only 20% of New York City’s graduating seniors are prepared for college. Only 10% of children in the Bronx will ever go. This represents the inequity in the nearly 50 urban and rural regions where we work around the country. For the over 16 million children growing up in poverty, these disparities severely limit life opportunities.

Teach For America enlists a diverse corps of high-achieving recent college graduates and professionals from all sectors who commit to teach for two years in a low income community and become lifelong advocates in the effort to expand educational opportunity.

As a corps member, your days will be filled with challenge and meaning and you will grow as you do your best for your students. Our corps members use their numerous skills and experiences from their varied work, leadership, and academic backgrounds to effect change in their classrooms and help break the cycle of inequity that prevents students from fulfilling their potential.

Do you have:

  • A deep belief in the potential of all kids and a commitment to do whatever it takes to expand opportunities for students
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and superior interpersonal skills to motivate others
  • Perseverance in the face of challenges, ability to adapt to changing environments, and a strong desire to do whatever it takes to improve and develop
  • Respect for individuals’ diverse experiences and the ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds

Are you prepared to:

  • Attend a rigorous pre-service summer training program designed to build upon and translate your professional skills into your role as a teacher
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and an alternative teacher certification program to ensure your success as a full-time teacher and leader
  • Set an ambitious vision for your students’ academic success, plan purposely, and work relentlessly alongside colleagues and others committed to improving academic outcomes in your school

Ways you may use your current skills in the classroom:

  • Translate your business skills through  teaching, school management, entrepreneurship
  • Fundraise for your under-resourced classroom
  • Organized parent workshops to provide educational assistance
  •  Recruit volunteers in your classroom, lead and delegate to others

Last year, Teach For America welcomed over 430 business professionals to join the corps.  The leaders we recruit are committed to long-term impact in the education sector.  Two-thirds of our alumni remain in education in various roles – as lifelong teachers, principals, superintendents, policymakers, entrepreneurs, district attorneys, and more.  Teach For America helps to strengthen this community by providing career and leadership support through benefits with graduate school programs and initiatives in social entrepreneurship and other education leadership paths.  Learn more here.

“As a part of this community, you simultaneously recognize your own power to improve the lives of students everywhere and also that you are part of something that is larger and more important than you.”  - Chike Aguh, NYC Corps ’06, Wharton MBA, Harvard Ed.M

Compensation and benefits overview

  • Full salary, comprehensive health insurance, and retirement benefits from your school district. Salary ranges from $25,500 to $51,000, depending on where you teach
  • Intensive training, teacher certification program, ongoing support, and career development as a corps member and alum, including development of leadership, communication, management, and problem solving skills, among others
